Conicelli Donates to Operation Bedding for the Troops Overseas

Mary Conboy founded “Operation Bedding” after her son Adam was killed in Iraq in 2006.  The organization has already shipped 13-thousand boxes of hygiene supplies.

Now, Conboy and her volunteers have filled a thousand stockings for his unit, but can’t come up with the money to send them.

“We find ourselves in a situation with a backlog of supplies, which really breaks my heart because they sit on my shelf because I can’t get them over there and they desperately need them” Conboy said.

Conicelli agreed to pay for the shipping of these supplies.  Please call Michael Hammond Jr. at 484-429-3833 if you would like to help package the supplies.  He will be there as well as Channel 10 at 6210 Ridge Ave. in Philadelphia Monday morning from 5-7 am.

A Marine's Last Request...
Operation Bedding came to be after a Sunday morning phone call from my son Adam, who at the time was serving in Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He requested some basic supplies which included pillows. He said "whatever you send make sure it is in the amount of forty". He wanted to insure that his comrades have the same comforts that he did. He laughed at my response and said "get Operation Bedding going Mom" That Friday Adam was killed. Without realizing it Adam had inspired his own Memorial Fund.

Each week week, Operation Bedding sends out a variety of supplies on average about six to ten cases. Items that need to be replaced often are baby wipes. They are used often due to the extreme heat and limited bathroom conditions. Powdered drink mixes are another item we have a hard time keeping up with. The most requested kind is Gatorade. To keep them from dehydrating due to the high temperatures, the troops are required to drink a certain amount of water each day. They said it's much easier to do if it's flavored and Gatorade contains much needed electrolytes. However, the most appreciated item was a shipment of new pillows. Something so simple meant so much to the marines. One marine told me it was like Christmas morning when the boxes came in! They are thankful for every item sent especially letters from strangers. Just knowing that people do care and appreciate their effort keeps them going everyday.

1st Place Finish for Toyota at NASCAR Sprint Cup Series

The Big 3 domination of the NASCAR Series has finally been broken. For the first time in 54 years, a non-American car has won an official NASCAR race. Not surprisingly, the honor goes to Toyota.  Not only did one Toyota take the gold, but David Reutimann came in second, giving Toyota a one-two Camry finish.
Car number 18 drove by 22 year-old Kyle Busch, competing for the Siemens PLM Software sponsored Joe Gibbs Racing team.  He came in second place on the Las Vegas Motor Speedway on March 2. On March 9 he managed to capture the first place spot at the Kobalt Tools 500 in Atlanta, writing history as both the youngest driver to win in Atlanta and giving Toyota their first NASCAR win.
Other Toyota Camry finishes: Reed Sorenson (15th), Martin Truex Jr. (17th), Joey Logano (18th) and Marco Ambrose (20th) also finished in the top-20 for Toyota.  Camry drivers Scott Speed (33rd), Denny Hamlin (34th), Kevin Conway (36th), Casey Mears (36th) Robby Gordon (40th), Todd Bodine (41st), Scott Riggs (42nd) and Michael McDowell (43rd) were also in the field.
With the finish, Busch climbed five spots to third in the unofficial NSCS point standings following Bristol.  Hamlin (fifth), Reutimann (17th) and Truex (20th) are also in the top-20 in points after 24 of 36 races.

“This is awesome,” Busch, said following the race.  “I love Bristol and I love winning.  And to do it for the first time ever in NASCAR, to sweep the weekend, man, that’s pretty awesome.  I don’t know what to think.  I’ve been trying to do this since I got to NASCAR.  Fortunately, tonight I was able to get it done, be the first one to do it.”
If you are interested in a Toyota Camry, please call 610-825-7128 to set up an appointment with a Sales Consultant at Conicelli Toyota.

Mr. Nice Guy's Tips for Teen Driving Safety at Night

Because of decreased visibility and an increased risk of dozing off, driving at night can be quite dangerous. While experienced drivers often don’t think twice about the extra risks associated with driving at night, for inexperienced teen drivers, night-time driving can be quite dangerous if the proper precautions are not taken.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration [NHTSA], fatality rates at night are three times higher than those during the day. In fact, driving between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. only accounts for 23 percent of all vehicle miles traveled yet it accounts for more than 50 percent of all motor vehicle fatalities for those over 16 years old.
As your teen is learning to drive, you should take some time to make sure they understand the dangers of driving at night and are taking the proper steps to ensure a safe trip to and from home.
Here are ten tips for late-night driving.

1.    Check your vision
As the school year comes to an end, your teen probably has a lot more free-time to go to the optometrist. Whether they’ve always had perfect vision or wear contacts and/or glasses, a quick visit to your local eye doctor could diagnose any problems and give you the assurance you need, especially if you’ve noticed your teen squinting more.

2.    Prepare your vehicle
Before your teen heads out, you should check and clean the headlights and taillights and remove any dirt or smudges from the windows and mirrors. Dirt and finger prints on the windows and mirrors can cause glares at night. If it’s been a while since your last safety inspection, you should also make sure your headlights are properly aligned because mis-aligned headlights can blind other drivers and reduce your ability to see the road. If your teen plans on using their car during college, you can consider anti-reflective coating which can help reduce glare at night. You can also purchase anti-reflective coated glasses.

3.    Use your lights courteously
Although you should always turn on your headlights one hour before sunset you should keep you headlights on low beams if you are following a vehicle or if you see an oncoming vehicle on the other side of the road. This way, you can avoid blinding other drivers with your lights. You should also use low beams during heavy fog because high beams can reduce your ability to see and may blind other drivers. If you see an oncoming vehicle with its high beams on, you can avoid glare by watching the right edge of the road and using it as a steering guide.

4.    Slow down and stay back
While you should never speed or tailgate cars, doing so at night is even more dangerous because the lack of light makes it more difficult for you to gauge depth perception. Also, because you peripheral vision is often compromised when it is dark, you will need more time to react to unexpected situations

5.    Limit the number of passengers
Studies have shown that 59 percent of teenage passenger deaths occur in vehicles driven by another teenager and fatal crashes involving young drivers are much more likely to occur when other teenagers are in the car.  While these figures are grim, they make sense because teen drivers are more likely to get distracted by their friends and have less experience reacting to emergency situations on the road.  While many states have laws limiting the number of passengers a teen driver can have in his/her car, you should talk to your teen about limiting the number of teen passengers in their car to one or two people.

6.    Avoid distractions
Studies show that almost 80 percent of crashes involve driver inattention within three seconds of a crash and at 40 mph, a car can travel almost 180 feet within three seconds. Talk to your teen about keeping their eyes and mind on the road and hands on the steering wheel at all times. While music can make a ride more enjoyable, it should never take priority over driving. Visit VehicleVibes.com to find some tips on avoiding distracted driving you can share with your teen.

7.    Sleep more
Because of decreased visibility and the increased risk of an accident, driving at night requires you to be completely alert and 100 percent focused on the road. Unfortunately, as it gets later into the night, drivers may find themselves dozing off behind the wheel, putting themselves and other drivers at risk for a fatal accident. Encourage your teen to get at seven to eight hours of sleep each night and consider providing them with some extra cash for a cab, just in case they are too tired to drive.

8.    Buckle up
According to the National Safety Commission, two-thirds of traffic fatalities at night involve drivers or passengers who were not wearing seat belts.  Currently, 30 states have primary seat belt laws, meaning you can be pulled over for not wearing a seat belt without another traffic offense taking place and 18 states have secondary seat belt laws. New Hampshire is the only state without a primary or secondary seat belt law for adults.

9.    Check your meds

Many over-the-counter and prescription medication can induce drowsiness or fatigue, so before taking them, check the warning labels and/or stickers.  If you still are not sure, ask your pharmacist. Often times, these medications can impair your driving ability and make staying awake behind the wheel even more difficult.

10.     Communicate
While you may not want to annoy your teen with constant phone calls, it is always a good idea to have your teen text or call you with an update of where they are and where they are going every one to two hours. This way, you have a general sense of where they are and who they are with and can react appropriately if needed. Although you may want to constantly check-in on your teen, showing a little restraint will show that you trust your teen enough to make responsible decisions.

Shane Victorino Wins 3rd Straight Gold Glove

Phillies center fielder, Shane Victorino, continues to be recognized as one of the best outfielders in baseball. Not only is he the only Phillies player to win a Gold Glove this year, he’s the first Phils outfielder to win three consecutive Gold Glove Awards since Garry Maddox won eight consecutive from 1975-82. Victorino tied for the league lead in assists (11) and finished fifth out of 37 qualifying outfielders in the league in fielding percentage (.995) and range factor per game (2.59).
Besides the lock that Roy Halladay is winning the Cy Young, you have to figure Charlie Manuel will at least be in the discussion for Manager of the Year given the job he did with the injury-riddled Phillies roster. Announcements for those awards will happen in the coming weeks.
While Victorino may be winning the award every year simply based on reputation, he has certainly been a solid outfielder for the Phillies the past few years. Jimmy Rollins, who had won three straight Gold Gloves, didn't pick one up this year because of all of his injury issues.
The complete NL Gold Glove list:
P Bronson Arroyo (Reds)
C Yadier Molina (Cardinals)
1B Albert Pujols (Cardinals)
2B Brandon Phillips (Reds)
3B Scott Rolen (Reds)
SS Troy Tulowitzki (Phillies)
OF Michael Bourn (Astros), Carlos Gonzalez (Rockies) and Shane Victorino (Phillies)

"See Jon Run": Jon Runyan, Retired Philadelphia Eagles Offensive Lineman, Elected to Congress!!!

"See Jon Run" Written by: Michael Hammond Jr.
The Republican candidate and retired Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman, was elected to Congress in New Jersey’s third district on Tuesday. He defeated John Adler in the race, which was a closely-watched battle that was on the national radar. Runyan's victory played into the GOP wave that changed the leading party in the House.

During the election's final days, Runyan was able to capitalize when Adler was reportedly involved in an attempt to plant another candidate on the ballot. It was suspected that Adler would have done so to siphon off votes from Runyan.
Runyan, 36, will join Byron "Whizzer" White and JC Watts, among others, as NFL players who held major public office. If his congressional career is anything like his NFL career, Runyan should do alright. During his 14-year NFL career, the offensive lineman was 7-2 when visiting D.C. to play the Redskins.

Testimonial from a Salvation Army guest:

“I came to the Salvation Army to escape from my abusive fiancĂ©.  When I met him he didn’t drink but as time went on he started to drink heavily and would occasionally get physical with me.  One time he beat me and beat our son and that is when I left, never to return.  I was scared when we arrived and the people there were so supportive to my son and me.  After two months I was enrolled in a county program to finish my education.  I was able to get into another Salvation Army program that helped pay my rent as I worked and went to school.

Today I am working full time in the medical field, my son and I have our own apartment and I was able to save up for my first used car.  I never expected my life to get so mixed up but I am thankful that the Salvation Army shelter was there for us, so very thankful.”
