The Man Behind the Philly Phanatic

Ever wonder who’s the big galoot in the shag-green suit that dances on top of the dugout and drives an ATV around Citizen’s Bank Park? It’s forty-four year old, Tom Burgoyne, whose 5’10”, 170 pounds, and has been wearing the thirty-five pound Phanatic suit for sixteen years, since the 1994 season.

Tom wasn’t green to being a Mascot when he first started with the Phillies. He had been the Hawk at Saint Joseph’s Prep when he was in college. Burgoyne remembers the day in 1989 when he browsed the want ads in The Philadelphia Inquirer. He was a year out of business school at Drexel and checked first under S, for sales, and then under M, for management. That's when he saw it: Mascot Wanted. He answered the blind ad, which turned out to be for the backup Phanatic. He performed more than a thousand times in shopping malls and classrooms before, the original Phanatic, Dave Raymond, which left after sixteen years in 1994. Burgoyne has been the main man ever since.

"It's supposed to look easy," Burgoyne says. "But it's not. This is hard work. Sure, it smells, and you get the occasional foul ball to the noggin. I sweat through five T-shirts a night. But that's no big deal. You put some stick-on air fresheners in the head and Febreze under the armpits at night and you're good to go."

Phillies Have High Hopes After 8-6 Win Over Yankees in Game 5!

The bats woke up for the Phillies last night when they were able to hold the Yankees in the 9th inning and pull out an 8-6 victory in game five! This will bring the Phillies trailing 2-3 to the Yanks in the series.

They looked like a whole different team from the previous night! Phenomenal pitching by Cliff Lee and you can’t forget the heavy-hitting machine, Chase Utley, knocking in four runs with his two homers last night. He is now tied at five homers with Reggie Jackson for the all time record in World Series homeruns.

You can check out Game 6 back in the Big Apple on Wednesday at 7:57 EST.

Winter Car Care Tips from the Pros

Now that our clocks have been turned back an hour and the leaves have started changing colors, I’m going to list a few tips that are provided by the nonprofit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) to take care of your car in the upcoming cold weather. ASE is the group that certifies automotive technicians.

1. Change your oil as specified in the owner’s manual (usually 3,000 miles). In cold climates, use winter grade oil.
2. In case of an emergency, make sure that you have gloves, boots, blankets, flares, a small shovel, sand, tire chains, a flashlight, and a cell phone.
3. Make sure your heater and defroster is in good working conditions. You don’t want to be stuck in the freezing cold with no heat!
4. Worn tires will be little help in the winter weather. You should examine tires for the remaining tread life, uneven wearing, and cupping. Also check the sidewalls for cuts and nicks. Check tire pressure once a month. Rotate as recommended and have a spare tire and a jack that is in good condition.

Phillies vs. Yankees in Game 1 of the World Series Today!

The Game starts at 7:57 on Fox at the Yankees Stadium. Cliff Lee starts out pitching for the Phillies and CC Sabathia takes the mound for the Yanks.

The Phillies won two of three games when playing them in the regular season. Both Teams have a premier ace pitcher, MVP sluggers, and both teams can hit home runs. So they are both very evenly matched up. If the Phillies win the World Series, they will be the first team to repeat as WS champs since 1998-2000.

Jay-Z and fellow New Yorker, Alicia Keys, were due to perform “New York State of Mind” for Game 1, but due to bad weather, it has been pushed to Thursday. It still isn’t clear if Game 1 will be postponed.

The Conicelli Family is a huge supporter of the Philadelphia Phillies and has created contest for fans to participate in. It is the Philly Phan Photo Contest. Add Conicelli Autoplex as a fan on Facebook and submit your photo to the event for your chance to win $250 Wawa gas/gift card.
